1. ¿ì¸® ÁÖ ¿¹¼ö ±×¸®½ºµµ²²¼ “ȸ°³Ç϶ó”(¸¶4:17)°í ÇϼÌÀ» ¶§, ÀÌ´Â ¹Ï´ÂÀÚÀÇ »î Àüü°¡ ȸ°³ÇÏ´Â »îÀ̾î¾ß ÇÔÀ» ¸»¾¸ÇϽŠ°ÍÀÌ´Ù. Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said 'Poenitentiam agite', willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance.
2. ÀÌ ¸»¾¸ÀÌ °íÇؼº»ç, Áï »çÁ¦¿¡ ÀÇÇØ ÁýµµµÇ´Â °í¹é°ú ¼ÓÁË·Î ÀÌÇصǾ ¾È µÈ´Ù. This word cannot be understood to mean sacramental penance,i.e., confession and satisfaction, which is administered by the priests.
3. ÇÏÁö¸¸ ÀÌ°ÍÀÌ ´ÜÁö ³»Àû ȸ°³¸¸À» ÀǹÌÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº ¾Æ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯ÇÑ ³»Àûȸ°³(inner repentance)´Â À°½ÅÀÇ ´Ù¾çÇÑ ¿ÜÀû ¼öÇàÀ» ¼ö¹ÝÇÏÁö ¾Ê´Â ÇÑ, ¹«°¡Ä¡ÇÑ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. Yet it means not inward repentance only; nay, there is no inward repentance which does not outwardly work divers mortifications of the flesh.
4. ÀÚ±â ÀÚ½ÅÀ» ¹Ì¿öÇÏ´Â Çü¹ú, Áï ÂüµÈ ³»Àû ȸ°³´Â ¿ì¸®°¡ Çϳª´Ô ¿Õ±¹¿¡ µé¾î°¥ ¶§±îÁö °è¼ÓµÈ´Ù. The penalty [of sin], therefore, continues so long as hatred of self continues; for this is the true inward repentance, and continues until our entrance into the kingdom of heaven.
5. ±³È²Àº ÀÚ±âÀÇ ±ÇÀ§³ª ±³È¸¹ýÀÇ ±ÇÀ§¿¡ ºÎ¿©µÈ °ÍÀ» Á¦¿ÜÇÏ°í´Â ¾î¶°ÇÑ ¹úµµ °¡°¨ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. The pope does not intend to remit, and cannot remit any penalties other than those which he has imposed either by his own authority or by that of the Canons.
6. ±³È²Àº ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ÆÇ°á¿¡ À§ÀÓµÈ Á˸¦ Á¦¿ÜÇÏ°í´Â Çϳª´Ô²²¼ ¿ë¼ÇϼÌÀ½À» ¼±¾ðÇϽŠ°Íó·³ ¾î¶°ÇÑ Á˵µ ¿ë¼ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. ±³È²ÀÇ ±ÇÇÑÀ» ³Ñ´Â Á˴±³È²ÀÇ ¿ë¼·Î »çÇÏ¿© ÁöÁö ¾Ê´Â´Ù. The pope cannot remit any guilt, except by declaring that it has been remitted by God and by assenting to God's remission; though, to be sure, he may grant remission in cases reserved to his judgment. If his right to grant remission in such cases were despised, the guilt would remain entirely unforgiven.
7. Çϳª´Ô²²¼´Â ±×ÀÇ ´ëÇàÀÚÀÎ »çÁ¦ÀÇ ±Ç·Â¿¡´Â º¹Á¾Çϸ鼵µ ±×¹ÛÀÇ ´Ù¸¥ ¸ðµç ÀÏ¿¡ ´ëÇؼ´Â °â¼ÕÇÒ ÁÙ ¸ð¸£´Â ÀÚÀÇ Á˸¦ °áÄÚ »çÇÏÁö ¾ÊÀ¸½Å´Ù. God remits guilt to no one whom He does not, at the same time, humble in all things and bring into subjection to His vicar, the priest.
8~29 : ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ÀÚÀÇ »ç¸é ¹®Á¦
8. ¼ÓÁËÀÇ ¹ýÀº »ì¾ÆÀÖ´Â »ç¶÷¿¡°Ô¸¸ ºÎ°úµÇ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. ±× ¹ý¿¡ µû¶ó, Á×ÀºÀÚÀÇ ÁË°¡ »çÇÏ¿©Áú ¼ö´Â ¾ø´Ù. The penitential canons are imposed only on the living, and, according to them, nothing should be imposed on the dying.
9. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î ±³È²À» ÅëÇÏ¿© ¿ª»çÇϽô ¼º·É²²¼´Â Á×À½°ú °ï°íÇÔÀÇ Ç׸ñÀ» ¿¹¿Ü·Î Ãë±ÞÇÏ´Â ±³È²ÀÇ ±³·É(ÎçÖµ)¿¡¼µµ ¿ì¸®µé¿¡°Ô ÀÚºñ¸¦ ÇàÇϽŴÙ. Therefore the Holy Spirit in the pope is kind to us, because in his decrees he always makes exception of the article of death and of necessity.
10. Á×Àº Àڵ鿡 ´ëÇÏ¿© ¿¬¿Á ¹®Á¦¸¦ ³»¼¼¿ö ¹ýÀû ¼ÓÁ˸¦ º¸·ùÇÏ´Â »çÁ¦µéÀº ¹«ÁöÇÏ°í »ç¾ÇÇÑ À̵éÀÌ´Ù. Ignorant and wicked are the doings of those priests who, in the case of the dying, reserve canonical penances for purgatory.
11. ±³È¸¹ý »óÀÇ ¹úÀ» ¿¬¿ÁÀÇ ¹ú·Î ¹Ù²Ù´Â °¡¶óÁö°¡ °¨µ¶µéÀÌ ÀÚ´Â µ¿¾È¿¡ ºÐ¸íÈ÷ »Ñ·ÁÁ³´Ù. This changing of the canonical penalty to the penalty of purgatory is quite evidently one of the tares that were sown while the bishops slept.
12. ÀÌÀü¿¡ ±³È¸¹ý »óÀÇ ¹úÀº ÁøÁ¤ÇÑ È¸°³ÀÇ ½Ã±Ý¼®À¸·Î¼ »ç¸é ÈÄ°¡ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ±×Àü¿¡ °¡ÇØÁ³´Ù. In former times the canonical penalties were imposed not after, but before absolution, as tests of true contrition.
13. Á×Àº »ç¶÷Àº Á×À½À¸·Î½á ¸ðµç Çü¹ú·ÎºÎÅÍ ¹þ¾î³ª°í, ±³È¸¹ý¿¡ °üÇÑ ÇÑ ÀÌ¹Ì Á×¾úÀ¸¸ç ±×·ÎºÎÅÍ ÇعæµÉ ±Ç¸®¸¦ °®°í ÀÖ´Ù. The dying are freed by death from all penalties; they are already dead to canonical rules, and have a right to be released from them.
14. Á×À½¿¡ À̸£´Â »ç¶÷¿¡°Ô ºÒ¿ÏÀüÇÑ °æ°ÇÀ̳ª »ç¶ûÀº ¹Ýµå½Ã Ä¿´Ù¶õ ºÒ¾ÈÀ» ¼ö¹ÝÇÑ´Ù. »ç¶ûÀÌ ÀûÀ¸¸é ÀûÀ»¼ö·Ï µÎ·Á¿òÀº ´õ¿í Å©´Ù. The imperfect health [of soul], that is to say, the imperfect love, of the dying brings with it, of necessity, great fear; and the smaller the love, the greater is the fear.
15. ÀÌ µÎ·Á¿ò°ú °øÆ÷ ±× ÀÚü°¡ ¹Ù·Î Àý¸ÁÀÇ °øÆ÷À̹ǷΠ¿¬¿ÁÀÇ Çü¹ú·Î½á ÃæºÐÇÑ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. This fear and horror is sufficient of itself alone (to say nothing of other things) to constitute the penalty of purgatory, since it is very near to the horror of despair.
16. Áö¿Á, ¿¬¿Á ±×¸®°í õ±¹ÀÇ Â÷ÀÌ´Â Àý¸Á, µÎ·Á¿ò ±×¸®°í ±¸¿øÀÇ È®½Å °£ÀÇ Â÷ÀÌ¿Í °°´Ù. Hell, purgatory, and heaven seem to differ as do despair, almost-despair, and the assurance of safety.
17. ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿µÈ¥µé¿¡°Ô´Â µÎ·Á¿òÀÌ °¨¼ÒµÇ¾î¾ß Çϸç, »ç¶ûÀº Áõ°¡µÇ¾î¾ß ÇÒ °Í °°´Ù. With souls in purgatory it seems necessary that horror should grow less and love increase.
18. ¶Ç ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿µÈ¥ÀÌ °ø°ú(ÍíΦ)ÀÇ ¿µ¿ª ¹Û¿¡ ÀÖ´ÂÁö, Áï »ç¶ûÀ» ´õ ÀÔÀ» ¼ö ¾ø´ÂÁöÀÇ ¿©ºÎ´Â À̼ºÀ¸·Îµµ, ¼º°æÀ» ÅëÇؼµµ ÀÔÁõµÇÁö ¾Ê´Â °Í °°´Ù. It seems unproved, either by reason or Scripture, that they are outside the state of merit, that is to say, of increasing love.
19. ¿ì¸®°¡ °¡Áø ±¸¿øÀÇ Ãູ¿¡ °üÇؼ´Â È®½ÅÇÏ°í ¾î¶² Àǹ®µµ °¡ÁöÁö ¾ÊÁö¸¸, ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿µµé¿¡ ´ëÇؼ´Â Áõ¸íÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø¾î º¸ÀδÙ. Again, it seems unproved that they, or at least that all of them, are certain or assured of their own blessedness, though we may be quite certain of it.
20. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î ±³È²ÀÌ “¸ðµç Çü¹úÀÇ ¹«Á¶°ÇÀûÀÎ »ç¸é”À̶ó´Â ¿ë¾î¸¦ »ç¿ëÇÒ ¶§, ÀÌ´Â ½ÇÁ¦·Î ¸ðµç Çü¹úÀ» ÀǹÌÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ °¡ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â Çü¹ú¿¡ ±¹ÇѵǴ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. Therefore by "full remission of all penalties" the pope means not actually "of all," but only of those imposed by himself.
21. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î Àΰ£ÀÌ ±³È²ÀÇ ¸éÁ˺θ¦ ÅëÇØ ¸ðµç Çü¹úÀ» ¸éÇÏ°í ±¸¿øÀ» ¹ÞÀ» ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù°í ¸»ÇÏ´Â ¸éÁ˺Π¼³±³ÀÚµéÀº À߸øÀ» ¹üÇÏ°í ÀÖ´Ù. Thereforethose preachers of indulgences are in error, who say that by the pope's indulgences a man is freed from every penalty, and saved;
22. »ç½Ç»ó ±³È²Àº ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿µÈ¥¿¡ ´ëÇؼ´Â ¾î¶² Çü¹úµµ »çÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. ÀÌ Çü¹úÀº ±³È¸¹ý¿¡ ÀÇÇÏ¿© Çö¼¼¿¡¼¸¸ ¹Þ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. Whereas he remits to souls in purgatory no penalty which, according to the canons, they would have had to pay in this life.
23. ¸ðµç ¹úÀÇ »çÇÔÀÌ °¡´ÉÇÏ´Ù ÇÒÁö¶óµµ ±×°ÍÀº ¿À·ÎÁö °¡Àå ¿ÏÀüÇÑ, Áï ±Ø¼Ò¼öÀÇ »ç¶÷¿¡°Ô¸¸ Çã¶ôµÉ »ÓÀÏ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. If it is at all possible to grant to any one the remission of all penalties whatsoever, it is certain that this remission can be granted only to the most perfect, that is, to the very fewest.
24. ¶§¹®¿¡, ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ »ç¶÷µéÀº Çü¹ú·ÎºÎÅÍÀÇ ±¸¿øÀ̶ó´Â ¾î¸¶¾î¸¶ÇÏ°íµµ ¹«ºÐº°ÇÑ ¾à¼Ó¿¡ ÀÇÇØ ±â¸¸´çÇÏ°í ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. It must needs be, therefore, that the greater part of the people are deceived by that indiscriminate and highsounding promise of release from penalty.
25. ±³È²ÀÌ ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ´ëÇÏ¿© °®´Â ÀϹÝÀû ¿µÇâ·ÂÀº ÁÖ±³³ª »çÁ¦°¡ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±³±¸¿¡ ´ëÇØ °®´Â Ưº°ÇÑ ¿µÇâ·Â¿¡ »óÀÀÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. The power which the pope has, in a general way, over purgatory, is just like the power which any bishop or curate has, in a special way, within his own diocese or parish.

28. µ·ÀÌ ¿¬º¸±Ë¿¡ ©¶ûÇÏ°í ¶³¾îÁö¸é, ¿å½É°ú Ž¿åµµ ºÐ¸íÈ÷ Áõ°¡ÇÑ´Ù. ±×¸®°í ±³È¸ÀÇ Áߺ¸ÀÇ °á°ú´Â ¿ÀÁ÷ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¼Õ¿¡ ´Þ·Á ÀÖ´Ù. It is certain that when the penny jingles into the money-box, gain and avarice can be increased, but the result of the intercession of the Church is in the power of God alone.

30~80 : »ì¾ÆÀÖ´Â ÀÚÀÇ »ç¸é ¹®Á¦
30. ´©±¸µµ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ È¸°³ÀÇ ¿ÏÀü¼º ¿©ºÎ¸¦ È®½ÅÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. ´õ±¸³ª ¼ÓÁËÀÇ ¿ÏÀü¼º ¿©ºÎ´Â ´õ¿í ´õ È®½ÅÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù. No one is sure that his own contrition is sincere; much less that he has attained full remission.
31. ½ÇÁ¦·Î ¸éÁ˺θ¦ »ç´Â »ç¶÷Àº ½ÇÁ¦·Î ȸ°³¸¦ ÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷¸¸ÅÀ̳ª µå¹°´Ù. ±ØÈ÷ ¼Ò¼ö¿¡ ºÒ°úÇÏ´Ù. Rare as is the man that is truly penitent, so rare is also the man who truly buys indulgences, i.e., such men are most rare.
32. ¸éÁ˺θ¦ »ê °Í ¶§¹®¿¡ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ±¸¿øÀÌ È®½ÇÇÏ´Ù°í ¹Ï´Â À̵éÀº ±×µéÀÇ ±³»çµé°ú ´õºÒ¾î ¿µ¿øÇÑ ÀúÁÖ¸¦ ¹ÞÀ» °ÍÀÌ´Ù. They will be condemned eternally, together with their teachers, who believe themselves sure of their salvation because they have letters of pardon.
33. ±³È²ÀÇ »ç¸éÀ» Çϳª´Ô°ú Àΰ£À» ÈÇØÄÉ ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¹«ÇÑÇÑ ¼±¹°À̶ó°í ¸»ÇÏ´Â À̵éÀ» Ưº°È÷ °æ°èÇÏ¿©¾ß ÇÑ´Ù. Men must be on their guard against those who say that the pope's pardons are that inestimable gift of God by which man is reconciled to Him;

35. ¿¬¿ÁÀ¸·ÎºÎÅÍ ¿µÈ¥À» ¼Ó·®Çϰųª °íÇØ ½ÅºÎ¸¦ ¸¶À½´ë·Î ¼±ÅÃÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â Çã°¡ÁõÀ» »ç·Á´Â À̵鿡°Ô´Â ȸ°³°¡ ÇÊ¿äÇÏÁö ¾Ê´Ù°í °¡¸£Ä¡´Â »ç¶÷µéÀº ºñ±âµ¶±³Àû ±³¸®¸¦ ¼±Æ÷ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. They preach no Christian doctrine who teach that contrition is not necessary in those who intend to buy souls out of purgatory or to buy 'confessionalia'.
36. ÁøÁ¤À¸·Î ȸ°³ÇÏ´Â ±×¸®½ºµµÀÎÀº ¸éÁ˺Π¾øÀ̵µ ÁË¿Í ¹ú·ÎºÎÅÍ ¿ÏÀüÇÑ »çÇÔÀ» ¹ÞÀ» ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù. Every truly repentant Christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt, even without letters of pardon.

Nevertheless, the remission and participation [in the blessings of the Church] which are granted by the pope are in no way to be despised, for they are, as I have said, the declaration of divine remission.

True contrition seeks and loves penalties, but liberal pardons only relax penalties and cause them to be hated, or at least, furnish an occasion [for hating them].

Christians are to be taught that he who sees a man in need, and passes him by, and gives [his money] for pardons, purchases not the indulgences of the pope, but the indignation of God.

Christians are to be taught that unless they have more than they need, they are bound to keep back what is necessary for their own families, and by no means to squander it on pardons.

Christians are to be taught that the pope's pardons are useful, if they do not put their trust in them; but altogether harmful, if through them they lose their fear of God.

Christians are to be taught that if the pope knew the exactions of the pardon-preachers, he would rather that St. Peter's church should go to ashes, than that it should be built up with the skin, flesh and bones of his sheep.

Christians are to be taught that it would be the pope's wish, as it is his duty, to give of his own money to very many of those from whom certain hawkers of pardons cajole money, even though the church of St. Peter might have to be sold.
52. ºñ·Ï ¸éÁ˺Π´ã´ç ÁÖ±³³ª ±³È²À̶ó ÇÒÁö¶óµµ Àڱ⠿µÈ¥ÀÇ ¾ÈÀüÀ» À§ÇØ ¸éÁ˺ο¡ ÀÇÇÑ ±¸¿øÀ» ¹Ï´Â °ÍÀº ÇêµÈ ÀÏÀÌ´Ù. The assurance of salvation by letters of pardon is vain, even though the commissary, nay, even though the pope himself, were to stake his soul upon it.
53. ¸éÁ˺ΠÆǸŸ¦ À§Çؼ ±³È¸¿¡¼ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¸»¾¸ ÀüÆĸ¦ ±ÝÇÏ´Â ±³È²Àº ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ ÀûÀÌ´Ù. They are enemies of Christ and of the pope, who bid the Word of God be altogether silent in some Churches, in order that pardons may be preached in others.
54. ¼³±³¿¡ ÀÖ¾î¼ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¸»¾¸º¸´Ù ¸éÁ˺ο¡ ´õ ¸¹Àº ½Ã°£À» ÇÒ´çÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¸»¾¸À» ÈѼÕÇÏ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. Injury is done the Word of God when, in the same sermon, an equal or a longer time is spent on pardons than on this Word.
55. ±ØÈ÷ ¹«ÀǹÌÇÑ °ÍÀÎ ¸éÁ˺ΰ¡ ÇÑ ´Ü¾î, ÇÑ ¹®Àå, ÇÑ ±¸¹®À¸·Î Ç¥ÇöµÈ´Ù¸é, ¸Å¿ì Áß¿äÇÑ °ÍÀÎ º¹À½Àº ¹é ´Ü¾î, ¹é ¹®Àå, ¹é °³ÀÇ ±¸¹®À¸·Î ¼³±³µÇ¾î¾ß ÇÑ´Ù. It must be the intention of the pope that if pardons, which are a very small thing, are celebrated with one bell, with single processions and ceremonies, then the Gospel, which is the very greatest thing, should be preached with a hundred bells, a hundred processions, a hundred ceremonies.

57. ¸éÁ˺ΰ¡ ÀÌ ¼¼»óÀÇ º¸¹°ÀÌ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó´Â °ÍÀº ºÐ¸íÇÏ´Ù. ¿Ö³ÄÇϸé, ¸¹Àº ¸éÁ˺ΠÆǸÅÀÚµéÀÌ À̸¦ ¸¶À½´ë·Î ³ª´©¾î Áֱ⺸´Ù´Â À̸¦ ±Ü¾î¸ðÀ» »ÓÀ̱⠶§¹®ÀÌ´Ù. That they are not temporal treasures is certainly evident, for many of the vendors do not pour out such treasures so easily, but only gather them.

Nor are they the merits of Christ and the Saints, for even without the pope, these always work grace for the inner man, and the cross, death, and hell for the outward man.
59. ¼º ·Î·»½º(St. Laurence)´Â ±³È¸ÀÇ °¡³ÇÑ ÀÚµéÀÌ ±³È¸ÀÇ º¸¹è¶ó°í ¸»ÇÏ¿´´Ù. ÀÌ´Â ±× ´ç½Ã ¸»ÀÇ ¾î¹ý¿¡ µû¸¥ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. St. Lawrence said that the treasures of the Church were the Church's poor, but he spoke according to the usage of the word in his own time.
60. ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ °ø·Î·Î ÁÖ¾îÁø ±³È¸ÀÇ ¿¼è°¡ ¹Ù·Î º¸¹°À̶ó´Â ¿ì¸®ÀÇ ¸»Àº ÃæºÐÈ÷ ¼÷°íÇÑ °á°úÀÌ´Ù. Without rashness we say that the keys of the Church, given by Christ's merit, are that treasure;
61. ¿Ö³ÄÇÏ¸é ºÐ¸íÇÑ °ÍÀº ±³È²ÀÇ ±ÇÇÑÀÌ Àڽſ¡°Ô ºÎ¿©µÈ ¹ú°ú ÀçÆÇÀ» ¸éÇØÁֱ⿡¸¸ ÃæºÐÇÑ °Í¿¡ ºÒ°úÇϱ⠶§¹®ÀÌ´Ù. For it is clear that for the remission of penalties and of reserved cases, the power of the pope is of itself sufficient.
62. ±³È¸ÀÇ ÁøÁ¤ÇÑ º¸¹° â°í´Â Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¿µ±¤°ú ÀºÇýÀÇ Áõ¾ðÀÎ °¡Àå °Å·èÇÑ º¹À½ÀÌ´Ù. The true treasure of the Church is the Most Holy Gospel of the glory and the grace of God.
63. ÇÏÁö¸¸ ÀÌ º¸¹° â°í´Â °¡Àå ½È°Ô ¿©°ÜÁö´Â °ÍÀ̱⵵ ÇÏ´Ù. ¿Ö³ÄÇϸé À̴ óÀ½ µÈ ÀÚ¸¦ ³ªÁß µÈ ÀÚ·Î ¸¸µé±â ¶§¹®ÀÌ´Ù. But this treasure is naturally most odious, for it makes the first to be last.
64. ÇÑÆí, ¸éÁ˺ÎÀÇ º¸¹° â°í´Â °¡Àå ¹Þ¾ÆµéÀ̱⠽¬¿î °ÍÀÌ´Ù. ¿Ö³ÄÇϸé ÀÌ´Â ³ªÁß µÈ ÀÚ¸¦ óÀ½ µÈ ÀÚ·Î ¸¸µé±â ¶§¹®ÀÌ´Ù. On the other hand, the treasure of indulgences is naturally most acceptable, for it makes the last to be first.
65. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î ±×µé¿¡°Ô º¹À½ÀÇ º¸¹° â°í´Â ¿¹·ÎºÎÅÍ µ· ¸¹Àº »ç¶÷À» ³¬´ø ±×¹°À̾ú´Ù. Therefore the treasures of the Gospel are nets with which they formerly were wont to fish for men of riches.
66. ÀÌ º¸¹° â°í´Â ¿À´Ã³¯µµ ±×°ÍÀ» °¡Áö°í »ç¶÷ÀÇ Àç»êÀ» ³¬´Â ±×¹°ÀÌ´Ù. The treasures of the indulgences are nets with which they now fish for the riches of men.
67. ¼±µ¿°¡µéÀÌ ÃÖ°íÀÇ ÀºÇý¶ó°í ÁÖÀåÇÏ´Â ¸éÁ˺δ ½ÇÁ¦·Î´Â ¸éÁ˺ΰ¡ ÀÌÀÍÀ» ÁõÁø½Ãų ¶§¿¡¸¸ ±×·¯ÇÑ °ÍÀ¸·Î ÀÌÇصǰí ÀÖ´Ù. The indulgences which the preachers cry as the "greatest graces" are known to be truly such, in so far as they promote gain.
68. ÇÏÁö¸¸ ÀÌ´Â »ç½Ç»ó Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ÀºÇý¿Í ½ÊÀÚ°¡ ½Å¾Ó¿¡ ºñ±³ÇØ º¼ ¶§ °¡Àå ¹«ÀǹÌÇÑ ÀºÇý¿¡ ºÒ°úÇÏ´Ù. Yet they are in truth the very smallest graces compared with the grace of God and the piety of the Cross.
69. °¨µ¶°ú »çÁ¦µéÀº ±³È² ¸éÁ˺Π»çÀýµéÀ» ±â²¨ÀÌ ±×¸®°í ¸Å¿ì °æ°ÇÇÏ°Ô ¸Â¾Æµé¿©¾ß ÇÑ´Ù. Bishops and curates are bound to admit the commissaries of apostolic pardons, with all reverence.

75. ¸éÁ˺θ¦ °ú´ëÆò°¡ÇÏ¿© Àΰ£ÀÌ ¾Æ¹«¸® ¸øÇÒ ÁþÀ» ÇÏ°í, ½ÉÁö¾î Çϳª´ÔÀÇ ¾î¸Ó´Ï¸¦ ¹üÇß´Ù ÇÒÁö¶óµµ ¸éÁ˺ΰ¡ ±× Á˸¦ »çÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Ù°í »ý°¢ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº ¹ÌÄ£ ÁþÀÌ´Ù. To think the papal pardons so great that they could absolve a man even if he had committed an impossible sin and violated the Mother of God -- this is madness.
76. ¿ì¸®ÀÇ ÁÖÀåÀº ±³È²ÀÇ ¸éÁ˺δ ¾Æ¹«¸® ÇÏÂúÀº ÁË¶óµµ »çÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù. We say, on the contrary, that the papal pardons are not able to remove the very least of venial sins, so far as its guilt is concerned.

We say, on the contrary, that even the present pope, and any pope at all, has greater graces at his disposal; to wit, the Gospel, powers, gifts of healing, etc., as it is written in I. Corinthians xii.
79. ±³È²ÀÇ ¼ºÀÇ¿¡ ±×·ÁÁø ½ÊÀÚ°¡¿Í ¸éÁ˺Π»çÀýÀÌ ¼¼¿î ½ÊÀÚ°¡°¡ ±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ ½ÊÀÚ°¡¿Í °°Àº °¡Ä¡¸¦ °¡Áø´Ù°í ¸»ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº ¸ðµ¶ÀÌ´Ù. To say that the cross, emblazoned with the papal arms, which is set up [by the preachers of indulgences], is of equal worth with the Cross of Christ, is blasphemy.

81. ÀÌ ¹«ºÐº°ÇÑ ¸éÁ˺ÎÀÇ °Á¶ ¶§¹®¿¡ ¾Æ¹«¸® ¹Ú½ÄÇÑ »ç¶÷ÀÌ¶óµµ ¼¼ÀεéÀÇ Áß»ó ¶Ç´Â ³¯Ä«·Î¿î Áú¹®À¸·ÎºÎÅÍ ±³È²ÀÇ ±ÇÀ§¸¦ ÁöÅ°´Â °ÍÀÌ ¾î·Æ°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. This unbridled preaching of pardons makes it no easy matter, even for learned men, to rescue the reverence due to the pope from slander, or even from the shrewd questionings of the laity.
82. “±³È²ÀÌ ±³È¸¸¦ ¼¼¿ì´Â µ¥ µå´Â ÇÏÂúÀº µ·À» È®º¸Çϱâ À§ÇØ ¼ö¸¹Àº ¿µÈ¥À» ±¸¼ÓÇÑ´Ù°í ÇÑ´Ù¸é, ±×´Â ¿Ö ¿¬¿Á¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¿µÈ¥µéÀÇ Àý¹ÚÇÑ Çʿ並 µé¾îÁְųª, ¶Ç´Â °Å·èÇÑ »ç¶ûÀ» ½ÇÇöÇϱâ À§ÇØ ¿¬¿ÁÀ» ¿ÏÀüÈ÷ ºñ¿ìÁö ¾Ê´Â°¡? ÈÄÀÚ´Â °¡Àå »ç¼ÒÇÑ °ÍÀÌ ¾Æ´Ñ°¡?” To wit: -- "Why does not the pope empty purgatory, for the sake of holy love and of the dire need of the souls that are there, if he redeems an infinite number of souls for the sake of miserable money with which to build a Church? The former reasons would be most just; the latter is most trivial."

To repress these arguments and scruples of the laity by force alone, and not to resolve them by giving reasons, is to expose the Church and the pope to the ridicule of their enemies, and to make Christians unhappy.

If, therefore, pardons were preached according to the spirit and mind of the pope, all these doubts would be readily resolved; nay, they would not exist.
