Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. (2 Cor. 1:3-4) 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하나님을 찬양합시다. 그분은 인자하신 아버지이시며 모든 위로의 근원이 되시는 하나님으로서 우리가 어떤 환난을 당하더라도 위로해 주시는 분이십니다. 따라서 그와 같이 하나님의 위로를 받는 우리는 온갖 환난을 당하는 다른 사람들을 또한 위로해 줄 수가 있습니다. (고후 1:3-4)
As representatives of Regional Ecumenical Organizations and the World Council of Churches, we share the challenges that our communities around the world are facing due to the coronavirus, COVID-19. 대륙 에큐메니칼 협의회와 세계교회협의회 대표로서 우리는 코로나바이러스인 COVID-19로 인해 전 세계 공동체가 직면하고 있는 도전을 공유합니다.
We urge people everywhere to give highest priority to addressing this situation and assisting in whatever ways we can in our collective efforts to protect life. This is a time to touch each other’s hearts, by what we say, share, and do – and by what we are unable to do—to protect the life that God created out of love. 우리는 모든 사람들이 이 상황을 해결하고 생명을 보호하기 위한 집단적 노력에 우리가 할 수 있는 어떤 방법으로든 도움을 주는 일에 가장 우선순위를 부여할 것을 촉구합니다. 지금은 하나님이 사랑으로 창조하신 생명을 지키기 위해 우리가 말하고 나누고 행하는 일-우리가 할 수 없는 일들-을 통해서 서로의 마음을 어루만질 시간입니다.
For the sake of that love, it is important and urgent that we adapt our modes of worship and fellowship to the needs of this time of pandemic infection, in order to avoid the risk of becoming sources of viral transmission rather than means of grace. 바로 그 사랑을 위해서, 우리의 예배와 교제 방식이 은혜의 수단보다는 바이러스 전염의 원천이 되는 위험을 피하기 위해서, 이 유행병 전염의 시대의 요구에 맞추어 우리의 예배와 교제 방식을 적응시키는 것이 중요하고 시급합니다.
Our faith in the God of life compels us to protect life by doing all that we can to avoid transmitting this virus. Let us manifest God’s unconditional love in safe, practical ways that protect life, alleviate suffering, and ensure that churches and public services do not become hubs of transmission of the virus. 생명의 하나님에 대한 우리의 믿음은 이 바이러스의 전파를 피하기 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 모든 것을 함으로써 생명을 보호하도록 강권합니다. 하나님의 무조건적인 사랑을 안전하고 실용적인 방법으로, 생명을 보호하고 고통을 완화하는 방식으로, 또한 교회와 공공서비스가 바이러스의 전달의 거점이 되지 않도록 주의하며 나타내십시다.
Physical distancing does not mean spiritual isolation. This is an opportune time for the churches all over the world to review their role in society by safely ministering to, providing for, and caring for the poor, the sick, the marginalized, and the aged –all those who are most at risk due to COVID-19. 물리적(사회적) 거리를 두는 것이 영적인 고립을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 지금은 전 세계 교회들이 COVID-19로 인해 가장 위험에 처해 있는 가난한 사람들, 병든 사람들, 소외된 사람들, 노인들을 안전하게 보살피고, 도움을 제공하면서 사회 속에서 교회의 역할을 재검토하는 시기라고 할 수 있습니다.
People in many parts of the world have become homebound these days. Being homebound does not mean that we cannot experience a deep spiritual solidarity with each other, by virtue of our baptism into the one body of Christ. We can pray at home. We can give thanks to God and pray for strength, healing, and courage. We can show our love for God and our neighbour by not gathering in person for public worship. Many congregations can share their worship gatherings online or digitally. Members and pastors can also stay in touch with each other and provide pastoral care by telephone. 요즘 세계 각지의 사람들이 재택생활을 하고 있습니다. 재택생활을 한다는 것은 같은 세례로 그리스도의 한 몸이 된 우리가 서로 깊은 영적 연대를 경험할 수 없다는 것을 의미하지는 않습니다. 우리는 집에서 기도할 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께 감사를 드리며 힘과 치유와 용기를 주시도록 간구할 수 있습니다. 우리는 공적인 예배를 위해 직접 모이지 않음으로써 (오히려) 하나님과 이웃에 대한 사랑을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 많은 교회 공동체들은 온라인이나 디지털 방식으로 그들의 예배 모임을 공유할 수 있습니다. 교회 성도들과 목회자들도 전화로 서로 연락을 취할 수 있고, 교인들을 목회적으로 돌볼 수 있습니다.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has reached all the regions of our planet. There are fear and panic, pain and suffering, doubt and misinformation, about both the virus and our response as Christians. Yet as a global community of faith, we affirm that, even in the midst of our vulnerability, we trust in God as God is our hope. 신종 코로나바이러스 유행병은 우리 지구의 모든 지역에 퍼졌습니다. 바이러스 자체와 그리스도인으로서의 우리의 반응에 대해서 두려움과 공포, 아픔과 고통, 의심과 잘못된 정보들이 있습니다. 그러나 전 지구적 믿음의 공동체로서 우리는, 하나님이 우리의 희망이기에 우리의 취약성 속에서도 하나님을 신뢰한다고 단언합니다.
Amid stories of suffering and tragedy, there are also stories of simple kindness and extravagant love, of solidarity and the sharing of hope and peace in innovative and surprising ways. 고통스럽고 비극적인 이야기들 속에서도, 단순한 친절이나 뭉클한 사랑의 이야기, 연대의 이야기, 그리고 혁신적이고 놀라운 방법으로 희망과 평화를 나누는 이야기들도 있습니다.
During this Lenten season, our pilgrimage takes us through the desert of hardships, difficulties, and temptations, from death to resurrection, into a new life with God. 이번 사순절 동안 우리의 순례는 고난과 어려움, 유혹의 광야를 지나 우리를 죽음에서 부활에 이르게 하고 하나님과 함께하는 새로운 삶으로 데려갑니다.
This desert is made more hostile and fearful by COVID-19, but we are called to join our hearts in solidarity with each other, to mourn with those who mourn, to share peace with those who are anxious, and to restore hope through solidarity in faith. 이 사막은 COVID-19에 의해 더욱 적대적이고 두려운 존재가 되었지만, 우리는 서로 연대하여 마음을 합치고, 슬퍼하는 사람들과 함께 슬퍼하며, 불안해하는 사람들과 평화를 공유하고, 믿음의 결속을 통해 희망을 회복하도록 부르심을 받고 있습니다.
That human solidarity is eroded and anxiety is heightened when we are in panic and concentrate on shopping and hoarding the basics. In so doing, we fail to be instruments of God’s grace in this season. 우리가 공황상태에 빠져 쇼핑에 몰두하고 생필품을 사재기할 때 우리의 연대는 약화되고 불안감이 고조됩니다. 그렇게 함으로써는 우리는 이 시기에 하나님의 은총의 도구가 되지 못합니다.
We recognize the need for responsible leadership by the state, communities, and faith leaders alike. Governments at all levels must ensure access to correct and timely information, address the situations due to loss of livelihood and employment, especially to provide access to clean water and sanitizers and soap, to safe shelter, and to compassionate care for the most vulnerable, while aware that some of these remain challenges for many across the globe. This is also a time for profound reflection on the common good, good governance, and ethical values rooted in our traditions.
우리는 국가, 공동체, 종교 지도자들 모두의 책임 있는 리더십의 필요성을 인식하고 있습니다. 정부는 모든 수준에서 정확하고 시기적절한 정보에 대한 접근을 보장하고, 전 지구상에 이러한 도전들이 남아 있음을 인지하면서 특히 깨끗한 물과 세정제, 비누, 안전한 피난처, 그리고 가장 취약한 사람들을 위한 특별 보살핌을 제공하기 위해, 생계의 어려움과 실업으로 인한 상황을 고심하여야 합니다. 지금은 또한 우리의 전통에 뿌리를 둔 공동의 선, 선한 통치, 윤리적 가치에 대한 깊은 성찰의 시간이기도 합니다.
In the midst of this grave crisis, we lift up our prayers for those providing leadership and for governments around the world, urging them to give priority concern to those who live in poverty, as well as to the marginalized and refugees living in our midst. 이 중대한 위기 속에서 우리는 지도력을 발휘해야 하는 사람들과 전 세계 정부를 위해 기도를 올리며 가난한 사람들은 물론 소외된 사람들과 우리 가운데 살고 있는 난민들에게 우선적인 관심을 줄 것을 촉구합니다.
As religious leaders, we raise our collective voices to highlight the necessity for greater attention to the needs of the homeless, the incarcerated, the elderly and those already suffering from social isolation. We remember, too, those people, especially women and children, who face abuse and violence, who are not safe at home and may suffer additional abuse and violence as stress increases. 종교 지도자들로서 우리는 집 없는 사람들, 투옥된 사람들, 노인들, 그리고 이미 사회적 고립으로 고통 받고 있는 사람들의 필요에 더 큰 관심을 기울여야 할 필요성을 강조하기 위해 공동의 목소리를 높입니다. 우리는 또한 스트레스가 증가함에 따라 집에서조차 안전하지 않고 추가적인 학대와 폭력을 당할 수 있는 사람들, 특히 여성과 어린이들을 기억합니다.
Finally, let us continue to pray for those infected with COVID-19, for their families, and for the medical staff and health workers who risk their lives to provide treatment and prevention for us. And let us pray also for public health officials, who, we hope, will be able, with God’s help and our cooperation, to contain the spread of the virus and prevent grave social, economic, and environmental consequences. 마지막으로, COVID-19에 감염된 사람들을 위해, 그들의 가족을 위해, 그리고 치료와 예방책을 제공하기 위해 목숨을 거는 의료진과 보건 종사자들을 위해 계속해서 기도합시다. 그리고 공중 보건 당국자들을 위해서도 그들이 하나님의 도움과 우리의 협조로 바이러스의 확산을 억제하고 중대한 사회적, 경제적, 환경적 결과(피해)를 방지할 수 있기를 희망하며 기도합시다.
God’s love is all-embracing, and the God of life is with each of us, even in our suffering. 하나님의 사랑은 모든 것을 포용하며, 생명의 하나님은 우리의 고통 속에서도 우리들 모두와 함께 계십니다.
